And the king appointed them a daily portion of the king's food, and of the wine which he drank; and to bring them up during three years, that at its end they might stand before the king. And among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; To whom the chief of the eunuchs gave names; for he gave to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-Nego. But Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested from the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. And God had brought Daniel into grace and compassion with the chief of the eunuchs. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking worse than the children's which are of your age? And you would endanger my head to the king. Then said Daniel to the steward, whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.
